How To Reach: Air: Bhutan is connected with Kolkata by the flights of Royal Bhutan Airlines . Flights go to Paro & from there jeep takes the passengers to Thimpu (55 km). Or one can reach Siliguri by Indian Airlines flight and by road via Joygaon to Phuntsoling. There is also direct bus available from Kolkata which goes via Siliguri. Thimphu, capital of Bhutan is a bustling town on the banks of the Thimphu Chhu and set gloriously in the hills of the Thimphu Valley. The broad Thimphu valley represents mostly the urban way of life. Just like any other place in Bhutan, this valley is clothed with beautiful trees from valleys to the hilltops and with beautiful buildings built and maintained with the traditional Bhutanese architecture. The name Thimphu originates from a sinking stone in front of Dechenphu Monastery. Thim means to sink and phu meaning to fly in local language. Oral history says that thestone is placed on top of a subdued ogress to prevent her from flying away.

This beautiful terraced valley is home to many of Bhutan’s oldest temples and monasteries and Bhutan’s only airport is located in this valley. The valley is also home to Mount Chomolhari (7300 meters) situated at the northern end of the valley whose glacier water forms the Pachu flowing through the valley.

Punakha: (Altitude 7500 ft.)
The valley of Punakha and Wangdue are warmer compared to Thimphu. There are also more paddy field in these two valleys compared to Thimphu valley. Punakha and Wangdue are only about 30 minutes drive from each other. River rafting is mostly done in this region. Punakha served as the capital of Bhutan till 1955 and still it is the winter seat of the central monk body.

Bumthang / Jakar: (Altitude 4500 ft.)
Bumthang is named after the ‘Bumpa’ shaped Bumthang valley. ‘Bumpa’ is the holy vessel for water found on the altar. ‘Thang’ means plain. This fascinating valley is the religiousheartland of the nation and home of the oldest Buddhist temples and monasteries.

What to See:Jakar Dzong, Wangdicholing Palace, Namkhe Nyingpo’s Dratsang, Tharpaling Gompha, Jampey Lhakhang, Kurjey Lhakhang, Membartsho-Burning Lake, Ura Valley.
Trongsa:
The drive from Wangdue to Trangsa is very excitng with the crossing of Pelela and then entering the beautiful Mangde valley. On the way to Trongsa from Pelela, one will come across Rukhubji village which has the shape of a giant snake. It is believed that a saint subdued the snake and that the village takes the shape from the subdued snake. The snake-shaped Rukhubji village is on the other side of the river which is clary visible from the road.
